STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Mark the Rotation Slits

Place your blue cup upside down and draw a circle around the base using a roll of tape as a guide. Use your ruler to mark vertical lines approximately 1 inch apart around the center of the cup. These lines will become the vents that catch the rising air.

  • Pro Tip: Space your lines evenly to ensure the cup stays balanced when it spins.

Step 2: Cut the Vents

Use your craft knife to cut along the vertical lines you drew in the previous step. Carefully press the left side of each cut strip inward to create a slanted opening. This “fan” shape is what allows the heat to push the cup around.

Cut the Vents
  • Pro Tip: Be gentle when folding the paper so you don’t tear the bottom rim of the cup.

Step 3: Create the Base Windows

Take your white cup and cut out a large rectangular “window” on one side. This opening provides oxygen for the candle and allows the light to shine through. Leave the top rim of the cup intact to support the spinning mechanism.

  • Pro Tip: If you use a real candle, make the window large to prevent the cup from getting too hot.

Step 4: Draw and Cut Your Princess

Draw a beautiful princess on your white cardstock and color her in with your favorite markers. Carefully cut her out, leaving a small tab at the bottom of her waist. This character will sit on top of your blue “skirt” cup.

  • Pro Tip: Keep the drawing lightweight so the heat can move the lantern easily.

Step 5: Assemble the Spinning Top

Attach your paper princess to the bottom of the blue cup (which is now the top of the lantern). Use a small piece of tape or glue to secure her firmly in the center. Make sure she is standing straight so the lantern remains balanced.

  • Pro Tip: You can add glitter to her dress for extra sparkle when she rotates..

Step 6: Set Up the Wire Pivot

Bend a piece of wire into a stand and attach it to the inside of the white base cup. The wire should come up through the center and end in a sharp point. This point acts as the pivot for the blue cup to spin on.

Set Up the Wire Pivot
  • Pro Tip: If the cup doesn’t spin, check that the wire point is perfectly centered and sharp.

Step 7: Light and Spin

Place a tea light inside the base, light it, and carefully balance the blue cup on the wire point. Wait a few seconds for the air to warm up. The princess will begin her magical dance as the heat rises through the vents!

Light and Spin
  • Pro Tip: Use an LED tea light if you are making this with young children for a worry-free experience.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Balance is Key: If your cup wobbles instead of spinning, the wire might not be in the exact center of the top cup.
  • The Sharp Point: The sharper the tip of your wire, the less friction there will be, allowing for a faster spin.
  • Airflow Matters: Make sure you are in a room without a strong draft or fan, as outside wind will interfere with the heat-driven rotation.
  • Safety First: Never leave a burning candle unattended. If the paper gets too hot, switch to a high-quality LED tea light.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How long does it take to complete?

This project takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on how detailed you make your princess drawing.

  2. What if I mess up the cuts on the cup?

Don’t worry! Paper cups are inexpensive. If a vent is too wide, you can use a small piece of tape to close it slightly and try again.

  3. Where can I buy the metal wire?

You can find floral wire at any craft store, or you can even straighten out a large metal paperclip!

  4. Can I use regular paper instead of a cup?

A paper cup is best because it holds its shape and has a reinforced rim, which helps it stay balanced on the wire.
